Methley is a dispersed village in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, situated south‑east of Leeds and close to Rothwell, Oulton, Woodlesford, Mickletown and Allerton Bywater. Originally, Methley developed around Saint Oswald’s Church along Churchside and Watergate. This 12th‑century Grade I listed church lost its spire in 1937 but remains a focal point for the community. The village has a strong industrial heritage: at one time five coal mines operated here – Savile Colliery, Methley Junction, Foxholes (Scholey Hill), Newmarket and Newmarket Silkstone – with the last pit closing in the mid‑1980s. Historic buildings include the Fatty Cake School House (dating from 1637) and the now‑demolished Methley Hall, once home to the Earls of Mexborough.
